The Message,
by Argyris Chionis,
directed by Anthi Founta.

“What remains of a person if you take away their beginning and their end?”

The theatrical group APUS returns with the tragicomic farce by Argyris Chionis, “The Message”, directed by Anthi Founta, for a new cycle of 8 performances.

After a successful run at the Open Theatre of Grava (July 2021), the Fournos Theatre (October 2022), and the Horos Theatre (May 2022), Argyris Chionis’ “The Message” will be presented from October 19 every Wednesday and Thursday at 21:00 at Horos Theatre.

“They” gave them a message to deliver to “Him.” They were told to go straight, but they got lost and cannot remember the message. They are two messengers without a message. Two messengers without a name. They are A and B and have forgotten where they started and where they are going. They walk for weeks, months, years, or even centuries, constantly creating new messages, which they constantly forget. Will they be able to remember the message?

The play is one of only three theatrical texts written by Argyris Chionis during 1971-1973. According to him, inspiration for “The Message” came from the work of Franco Sacchetti, an Italian Renaissance writer, in which he found early traces of the theatre of the absurd, and particularly similarities with Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot”.

An existential farce with clear influences from the theatre of the absurd. A creative and deeply human performance that fits entirely within the strict confines of a stage resembling a wooden puzzle-toy.

“If I had time, I would be something else” – B

What, in the end, is a messenger without their message?

Director’s Note:

“It’s like something you can’t stop doing, without knowing exactly why you do it. Better to do something without knowing why, than to stop doing something. Right? Who would we be if we didn’t do something? It’s better to be trapped in what we know and trust, than risk not being. That’s how we create the motions that surround us, the phrases we say in a box. Like the story of the astronaut toy – yes, Buzz Lightyear – who inside the box thought he had traveled galaxies, only to eventually realize he hadn’t taken a single step. In Argyris Chionis’ ‘The Message,’ A and B are not people of flesh and bone; they are two sketches, tragically designed to endure passage through an endless, motionless journey.”
