Director’s Note
A woman stays awake late at night. She surfs the internet, hoping to eventually fall asleep.
New tab. A girl fights for her life inside an elevator. / New tab. A man is naked in his bathtub. / New tab. Two strangers in the same car watch a late-night screening together. / New tab. Blue whale. At 2 a.m., the possibilities are endless. There are no limits to where you can end up…
The play *Midnight Movie* is the journey of a woman navigating the path of the internet. The performance brings to life the inner landscape of her mind as it wanders online. Her thoughts, a route full of memories, projections, and dreams, in a digital world. She lives a parallel reality which she shares with the audience. She suffers from a motor disorder. Time passes unevenly when a body is in pain. But her two digital bodies comfort her. They give her the strength she lacks. Along with them, the heroine takes the audience on a dream, into the world of the digital kingdom. A digital body is like a representation of ourselves in the online world. A character we create to interact with the digital field and escape into another reality. The protagonist does the same. She is led to a place where she is free to do whatever she wants, to go wherever she wants.
Through a cinematic logic combined with physical theatre and image creation via projection mapping, the stage transforms into a hospital, into a surreal bedroom, into a desert resembling a midnight movie, and into anything else the heroine imagines while traveling through this boundless world called the internet. The work examines the relationship between disability and the storytelling process in a contemporary, digital era. What is it like to have a digital body when your physical body continuously deteriorates and abandons you? What does a digital self mean and its life as a counterpoint to pain?
