“That’s how it is… This is the damn deathbed anxiety… But now we will have fun until death. All of us.” A.M. Nygren
I WILL DIE IF YOU DIE, the play by Swedish writer Anna Maria Nygren, premiered on January 6, 2017, at Horos Theatre, directed by Elena Pega, with a group of talented young actors: Giorgos Vouvakis, Orestis Karydas, Katerina Misichroni, and Alexandra Tavoulari.
Elena Pega, playwright and director with a significant career in avant-garde theatre, introduces us to a very young author, Anna Maria Nygren, and a provocative play that addresses issues affecting young people today.
THE PLAY…
Two girls and two boys take refuge behind a public building, experimenting with boundaries, danger, love, violence, and delinquency. Intense and extreme emotions in young bodies and minds seek relationships of love and friendship, bonds of coexistence that easily turn dangerous and violent, fragile and unstable. The play explores what abandonment, non-acceptance, and denial mean. Children who are no longer children, who do not know how to live, disconnected from the adult world, imitate actions and words from a dark and broken world. In their world, everything is ambiguous. Love has the power to save but also to destroy at the same time. That which causes them pain is also what they desire, because it is filled with fear, hardened by the absence of joy. Just like the children growing up in a world that neglects them, we too exist in a world that neglects us, and we neglect it in return. We are those children who do not understand the meaning of our actions, who do them even while fearing them, not knowing fully what we are doing.
