Number 74: Ala-Bangkok: duck with fresh white mushrooms, bell pepper, bamboo, onion, lemongrass, and a sauce of red curry and coconut (spicy). Five actors transform on stage into seventeen different people of a contemporary multicultural society. Five Asian chefs, in the kitchen of the Thai-Chinese-Vietnamese restaurant, the Golden Dragon, narrate the stories of the residents above and around this building, as well as what happens inside the kitchen. The five actors unravel the thread of these short, almost “cinematic” scenes, using as few resources as possible, relying solely on their bodies and voices. With an exceptionally clever text, full of humor and sensitivity, Simmelpfennig manages to capture contemporary sociopolitical life, commenting on all the wounds of the Western world, presenting us with the image of a worn-out Europe gradually reaching its decline. *The Golden Dragon* is a deeply political work that deals with human relationships, violence, migration, trafficking, and the struggle for survival. The puzzle of the story is composed through a frantic pace, exotic food orders, and sharp humor. At the center of the story is a young Chinese man suffering from a toothache and his lost little sister who, unknowingly, lives a few floors away. Why have we stopped listening to each other? Why do human relationships collapse? Why are we so isolated? “I wish I could be someone other than who I am. Someone completely different.”
