Football, Humanity’s Game,
by Thanasis Triaridis,
directed by Triantafyllos Delis.

IN BRIEF

FOOTBALL (2017), together with LEOPOLD (2017) and HIV (2018), form an informal political trilogy. The central idea of this trilogy is that the eternal culprits are the spectators – and that the time has come for us to pay a price. The author’s need to write these plays was born after his travels in Africa, wishing to speak about the journeys of the “well-fed” to the “hungry” Africa.

FOOTBALL is a “harsh bloody comedy,” a biting monologue filled with humor, which narrates the history of humanity through the history of football, beginning from the year 1500 AD.

The work’s key premise is that the fourth wall does not exist, allowing the actor to communicate directly with the audience. It is a play that seeks to awaken us, to “shift” us out of the comfort of our “seat” (as spectators), and to confront us with our responsibilities regarding the course of humanity.

We follow “F.,” portrayed by Sifis Polyzoidis – a contemporary human-being-fan-supporter – who poses questions about the past, the present, and above all the future of this world, where the audience itself is called upon to respond… He speaks to us about an ancient instinct of humans to “kick” and about a wild soul buried deep inside us, noting:

“Refined players and refined spectators… And somewhere deep within our conscience, remnants of the old soul still nestle… When they surface from time to time, we speak of hooliganism, of the senseless social violence of the metropolises, of the terrorism of the stadiums…”
