IN BRIEF
Athens is not one city. It is many. There is the Athens of tourism and the Athens of its residents. The Athens of Airbnb, of the golden visa, and the Athens of thousands of abandoned buildings. The Athens of gentrification and the Athens that becomes the ground for those displaced.
After its presentation at the Young Creators Festival of the National Theatre’s Experimental Stage, the performance CAPITAL: Athens continued its journey at Choros Theatre in Votanikos, with a mixed ensemble of actors and city specialists (residents, visitors, researchers), in a hybrid composition of performance and documentary theatre.
Personal testimonies, improvised conversations about interior design, and heated attempts to analyze the processes transforming the urban landscape, all attempt to capture the multiplicity of forces that shape this construction bearing the famous name: Athens.
The performance seeks to reveal the mechanisms, the genealogy, and the impacts of this construction. To document them and bring them to light. Ultimately, to reconcile us with the acknowledgment that “the city does not belong to us.”
