Historical Overview

The Theatre Company “Choros” is a Non-Profit Civil Company founded in 2003 in Thessaloniki. Its goal was to research a “poor theatre” with characteristics and stage codes inspired by the travelling theatre troupes that operated in the Greek provinces during the 20th century.

In 2005, Choros began its activity as a touring troupe aiming to explore, with an uninhibited approach, an identity free from the historical illusions of the past—a theatre far from folklore and stereotypes of Greekness—and simultaneously the stage training of an autonomous and skilled actor capable of responding to the demands of the stage code and the life imposed by constant travel and unorthodox theatrical spaces.

With each production, the troupe would travel across Greece in a variety of theatrical and non-theatrical spaces, coming into contact with different types of audiences. It was invited to festivals across Europe (Euro Art Festival – Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria 2006; Dialog Festival – Wroclaw, Poland 2007; 40th Tampere Theatre Festival – Tampere, Finland 2008; 43rd Kontrapunkt International Festival – Szczecin, Poland 2008; Sibiu International Theatre Festival – Sibiu, Romania 2009; Heidelberger Stückemarkt – Heidelberg, Germany 2013; Athens & Epidaurus Festival – 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015; Drama International Short Film Festival; International Puppet Theatre & Pantomime Festival – Kilkis 2007; International Puppet Theatre & Pantomime Festival – Nicosia, Cyprus 2009) and collaborated with major institutions (National Theatre of Northern Greece, Municipal Theatre of Trikala, National Theatre of Greece, Athens & Epidaurus Festival, University of Crete, International Cretan Studies Conference, Rialto Theatre Limassol, M. Cacoyannis Foundation, Onassis Foundation).

In 2008, the collaboration with the National Theatre for the staging of Sakis Serefas’ play “Melted Butter” marked the troupe’s stronger connection with Athens and ultimately led to the relocation of “Choros” to the capital.

In March 2016, the Theatre Company Choros inaugurated its theatrical venue at 6 Praviou Street under the name “Choros,” opening a new chapter in its history.

The Choros Theatre is a theatrical stage, an open and welcoming space for new theatrical artistic proposals as well as significant educational programs.

Choros opened with the play Orestes by Euripides, directed by S. Kakalas, in 2016. Since then, all productions of the Choros Theatre Company have been presented there: Greek Freak – Wuthering Heights (dir. Simos Kakalas), Waiting for Godot, The Wing (dir. Elena Mavridou).
